The building was constructed as Darphane-i Amire (Mint) during the Ottoman period between 1470 and 1475 for printing money. The building, being one of the most beautiful works of civil architecture of that period, was devastated by various fires and earthquakes. In 1707 it was rebuilt as Simkeshane-i Amire by Ummetullah Hatun, the senior wife of Sultan Ahmet III, adding fountains drinking fountains and a school. Strengthening design was developed by OTS based on the results of the damage survey and analysis carried out according to the functions in the scope of restoration project.
